Advice I wish someone had given me for my first job...a reply to a 90-day ad guy

...thank you for your request, but I would be doing you a disservice if I said it was wise to leave your first job after 3 months. I trust a lot of my friends and associates would offer you the similar advice that I found organized and well stated in this great blog "Advice I wish someone had given me for my first job" from Lifehacker.com

I know it is cliché, but it is undeniably true that anyone senior in this biz wishes they had known then what they know now. In a nutshell, this can be a cheat sheet for you and I’ll post the link to this article today in my blog.. My advice is you need to slow down and realize that the fundamentals of the business are critical as you move forward.  And by jumping so soon you show an impatience and inflated self worth that likely isn't really there.

To stay where you are prepare for a year one departure is a plan you don't share, you find a mentor inside the firm and do anything they ask, you take on more senior tasks from anyone who will let you, you work on new business to learn and absorb the politics of the company who wins and losses and why.

This is a bit of what was in the article, and the things I REALLY wish I had known then so I didn't step into them blindly later on. You will do well and your career has just begun, chasing any job anywhere can feel like growth, but that unfocused path has a lasting impact that’s based on the wrong or right reasons for you... who knows? Just be careful and seek mentors that you want to be like in the future and use that free coaching to help shape who you are and what makes you happy.

Best, Bob

Who's getting fired / hired in 2011?

Happy New Year!

What’s ahead in 2011?

Any brand can be great.
The tools are there, and inexpensive to try. If you’re not using them the new agency will. Great brands are doing good…good for mankind and the marketplace.

The old adage, “When elephants fight, ants die” is no longer true…The seismic account shifts of 2010 reflect agency size is seemingly irrelevant. “If you get it, you win it.” More so than ever before, brands are desperate to partner with agency brain trusts that instill relevance and preference with consumers.

It’s going to be a hot year for the 5 year planner…
This crop of thinkers / doers is a rare commodity due to the deep freeze that followed 9/11. Advancement will come easy for those with a keen understanding of the empowered consumer and their fellow army of advocates.

Great planning will lead the charge from Value to Valuable…
The new sexy has a cause and a purpose. “Belonging” is a comfort, and important during tough times. It’s time to become inspired by advertising again.

Think I’m crazy?
Is this B.S. from an old man? What’s your POV? Obviously business is booming and we are hiring. If you’re ready, let’s talk. The time is now.

As always, thanks for putting up with our shenanigans. Our success is only because of you.

Gale Executive Recruiting - A New Year

Hello Friends,

Hope you’ve had a wonderful and refreshing holiday season. Now, a new and exciting year is upon us.

From our perspective at the moment, helping our candidates keep perspective during these tough economic times is more important than ever before. This is why we remain dedicated to ensuring that they have the best tools and guidance available to them now.

In light of that, the quote from Warren Buffett seems especially applicable: “Someone's sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”

We have expanded our career counseling side of the house to include a Career Branding program. This very personal, one on one approach will help you to understand your personal brand's perceptions, barriers, accomplishments, and potential. During tough times, what brands do you trust? Do you buy based on potential or on proven results? These efforts will result in your personal brand SWOT; a unique and compelling positioning, a more effective, concise, results based resume, and a career brand tagline that you can use to quickly summarize your brand to your current and future employers.

We continue to be encouraged by the wonderful support we have received from our many friends, clients, and colleagues over the last year.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you are interested in finding out more about our career branding program, and executive recruiting services, or if you just want to say hello. Also, please let us know how you are doing and if we can be of assistance with any of your endeavors.

Here's to good health and prosperity for you in the coming year.

Kindest Regards,

Bob Gale

Recommendations for Bob Gale & Gale Executive Recruiting

Peter Brodnitz - Head of Advertising, Aetna

“What sets Bob apart from many in the search industry is his true desire to find right-fitting career moves for his candidates. This starts with a solid understanding of each candidate's talents, ambitions and goals then progresses to career coaching. When I returned from working overseas, Bob was an important advisor to help guide me to companies/jobs that were not only good short-term but important towards building an exceptional career long-term.” December 16, 2008

Scott Blair - Account Supervisor, Heil Brice Advertising

“Bob is a career coach unlike any other. Working with Bob provides the opportunity for a long-term professional relationship. Much more than an expert recruiter, he remains an invaluable resource throughout your career. His knowledge of the business is so extensive that, years after I initially worked with him, I still continue to turn to him first when I need advice. He is always willing to help, and truly cares about his clients. I trust and respect Bob immensely.” October 9, 2009
